:)

I don't want anything more
Than to see your face when you open the door
You'll make me beans on toast and a nice cup of tea
And we'll get a Chinese and watch TV
Tomorrow we'll take the dog for a walk
And in the afternoon then maybe we'll talk
I'll be exhausted so I'll probably sleep
And we'll get a Chinese and watch TV

Dissertation

I think my emerging approach to writing dissertation is different from other people I know. I work on every part in the same time so I can see and stick to the big picture. One downside is I haven't produced one presentable chunk yet. But it's all...coming together, in my head and on paper. Like an organized chaos, which is refreshing and nerve-wrecking at the same time. And emerging from bottom up like the city itself.

On complication

Over these past few months of researching there are times when i've paused to question whether some of what i'm doing or reading is too complicated or "unnecessarily complicated." little did i know (or like to accept) that this is what it IS supposed to be: long, extensive process who entails lots of overlaps, twists, and turns, etc.

but to be able to move is another story; it has to be more systematic. i now need to set myself and my research clear parameters of what this piece of work aims to answer. after all, dissertation is not a long essay. this is the moment when i realize that now i'm dealing with a different kind of writing and knowledge-building.

Good things come in three

or so they say. BUT NOT NOW! workshop in Wroclaw (prof keeps nagging me to get my act together and book flights), 10k word dissertation (this one not exactly 'good') AND and just got an email from UCL networking group saying they've managed to secure a summer work placement with Arup for me.

with ARUP Y'ALL. which i might have to fucking turn down because i already have more than enough on my plate. UGH.

Summer reading!

As if i don't have too much to read already! but what the heck, as much as i enjoy reading lofty theoretical discussion about urban spatial morphology, how form dictates function, etc, my brain wants some other outlets too! so here we go:

AND

Well, not that i am a fan of the two authors or anything (although i read a few pages of the House on Mango Street a few years ago and remembered liking it) BUT these are some of the few cheap buys i could find on amazon.co.uk! I might as well have ordered from the US and have it shipped over and still paid LESS. but life's too short to wait for a book you want to read. (or intend to want to read)

The average book price here is £6.99-7.99 which is roughly the same as in the US. BUT on American amazon, used books (whose conditions are 'very good' or 'like new') are like mad cheap man. i don't know what i would do when i go back to thailand. i probably will have to fly off to singapore and hoard a heap or something (not that your books are a lot cheaper singaporeans!). i don't remember when was the last time i paid full price for a brand new book! hmmm...it might have been the Man of My Dreams by Curtis Sittenfield, which turned out to be a bloody disgrace. life gets even shorter all of a sudden after you've finished a book like that.
